Ironmen Return Home

The Jamestown Ironmen returned home after a long 12 day road trip to prepare for the rest of the season. “It feels great to be home and the team is excited to be back in Jamestown and the billet families really missed the players” said Ironmen Head Coach Dan Daikawa.

The road trip started out with two games against the Chicago Hitmen. The Ironmen won both games by scores of 4-1 and 7-5. The trip then continued with four games at the North American Hockey League Showcase Tournament in Blaine, MN held from September 14^th-18^th.

The team went 0-4 during the showcase but Coach Daikawa said the games were a lot closer then what the scores indicated. The tournament started off with a game against the Coulee Region Chill in which Jamestown was shut out by a score of 4-0. The middle of the tournament didn’t get much better for the Ironmen as they fell to the Amarillo Bulls and the Alaska Avalanche by scores of 5-1 and 2-0 respectively. The tournament concluded with a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Topeka Roadrunners sending the Ironmen home with an overall record of 2-4.

The team will spend the week practicing before leaving Friday morning for Michigan, where they will play the Michigan Warriors (3-0-1; 7 points) and the Kalamazoo Jr. K Wings (2-2-0; 4 points). The team will return to Michigan the following weekend to again play the Warriors and then travel to Port Huron to play the Fighting Falcons (3-0-1; 7 points).

Opening weekend for the Ironmen will take place on October 7^th and 8^th as Jamestown plays host to Port Huron. The Ironmen will also be home the following weekend with games on October 14^th and 15^th against Chicago at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena. All games start at 7:05pm.

Coach Daikawa said that many college scouts along with the NAHL Commissioner, Mark Frankenfield and USA Hockey representatives will be in attendance for the opening game. “It would be great to fill the arena to show what the city of Jamestown and their fans are all about,” said Daikawa.

December Events

December will be a very busy time with the holiday shopping and activities going on all throughout Chautauqua County. We want to remind you that there are 3 big events going on in December at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena. On December 12, “Illuminate Jamestown” will take place along with the tour of the Arena Plaza between the arena and the Lillian Vitanza Ney Center on 3rd St. There will be activities going on all day culminating with the lighting of buildings downtown with Christmas lights and decorations.

On December 15 the First Annual Jingle Ball will take place with special musical guests the Boogie Wonder Band. This event will be catered with an open bar to VIP’s and cash bar for general admission. VIP tickets are $100, general admission tickets are $25 presale and $30 at the door. The ball is disco themed so feel free to wear your best 70′s garb along with some platform shoes and sunglasses!

The World Junior Championship precamp games are December 21 and December 23. Miss US of A

Rima Fakih is Crowned Miss USA

Lebanese-American immigrant, Rima Fakih was crowned Miss USA this week. Unsurprisingly, controversy has surrounded the 24-year-old beauty, but this time, surprisingly, it isn’t focused on her 2007 appearance in a pole-dancing competition or erotic photographs. Most people are focused on the fact that Fakih is the first contestant with known Muslim-background to win the contest.

Before we allow all our anti-terrorist feelings to get our blood boiling, we can’t forget about The Donald. Since Donald Trump has become the owner of the Miss USA pageant, there has been plenty of controversy surrounding the event. This controversy has attracted news coverage and turned the pageant into a topic of conversation for America.

So Donny boy…was it all part of the plan to have an Arab crowned as Miss USA just to draw some more attention ($$$) to the event? Although these may be negative allegations, they give the pageant more exposure and coverage, which is just what the Donald ordered.

March Madness

With the 2010 March Madness College Basketball Tournament underway we have already seen a bevy of upsets that have no doubt shook the masses as their brackets have taken a huge hit with the ousting of top seeds such as Georgetown and Vanderbilt. As for myself I started the first day games out well, choosing correctly on Murray State’s upset of Vanderbilt and Old Dominion over Notre Dame however my picks fell apart as the night wore on as my UTEP over Butler pick fell through and my ‘Cinderella’ Marquette choice was knocked out by Washington.

This time of year is both exciting and heartbreaking for sports fans but no amount of lost brackets will ever keep me from enjoying quite possibly the greatest event in all of sports, the men’s college basketball championship tournament. With my team North Carolina winning it all last year and this year barely being able to make it into the NIT tourny, it’s apparent that it’s an honor for most schools just to be in the 64 tournament. It’s a long road with many bidders for a small number of open slots and every player, coach, and team make this tournament their goal from the end of the previous season up until the following March.

3-D TV

Sony is the leader amongst high definition television manufacturers in developing the new wave of technology to hit home entertainment, 3 dimensional image sets. With the success of 3-D movies in theaters most importantly James Cameron’s monster hit Avatar, television manufacturers must adapt to the demand of consumers by adapting the use of 3-D to home television sets. The cost will undoubtedly be high for such sets, but the functionality of the new home technology will be cross functional for blu ray movies, high definition sources such as cable and satellite feeds, and videogame consoles.

Sony anticipates sales of approximately 2.5 million 3-D sets this fiscal year and based on the early success of 3-D capable sets, will decide to increase or halt production. 3-D technology has been utilized in the past, but problems resulting in headaches and nausea caused it to be unsuccessful in past ventures. With some tweaks and adjustments to the way 3-D is used, it has become more popular than ever, and with crazed ‘techies’ looking for the next craze there is a lot of excitement surrounding the new 3-D sets. We are proud to announce that the Arena Club @ the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena will be host to the Big Leg Emma Reunion show Friday May 7th, 2010. The band will reunite with members including Charity Nuse, Steve Johnson, and Kev Rowe to name a few. There will be presale tickets available at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena for $10 up to the day prior to the show. Day of tickets will be $12 at the door. The American People will be the opening act and will go on around 8:30 pm with Big Leg Emma performing at 10pm. This is an all ages show, but for the adult crowd there will be beer and wine served throughout the night.

Jordan World Circus is coming to the Arena March 30th and will have shows throughout the day. Check the arena website at www.jamestownarena.com for further information regarding show times.

Tiger Woods…Predator or Prey?

Today at 11 am Tiger Woods will address the public for the first time since it was revealed that he has had multiple affairs during his marriage to his wife Elin. Since the story first broke after Tiger’s mysterious car accident this situation has been a feeding frenzy for the media on an international scale. Seemingly fusing the Sports and Gossip pages together for this story, Tiger has been the target of criticism and his reputation has been bruised irreparably. Once Tiger checked into an anonymous sex clinic, which is rumored to be somewhere in Mississippi, the media has flocked to similar clinics all throughout the country to try to catch a glimpse of the world’s best golfer at his lowest. Not since Suri Cruise was born has the paparazzi had such a valuable target to stalk for.

Tiger Woods is undoubtedly the most talented golfer today, and up until his current situation was the most marketable athletes on the planet. The effect that his scandal will have on Tiger in regards to his sponsorships and fan base is yet to be determined. More important is the effect that it will have on Tiger as a husband and father. This brings me to my reason for writing this post.

Is it the right of the media to take stories like this and make them public? Should athletes, celebrities, and politicians be held to a higher standard than the rest of the general population? What are your thoughts?

Mardi Gras 2010

Our first annual Mardi Gras celebration held on Feb 13, 2010 was a great success. I would like to thank Hypnotic Clambake and the Pennsyltucky Peach Pickers for performing and keeping the crowd dancing and happy throughout the night. Also I want to thank all of the people that came out to enjoy the night, and because of the great turnout and the fun had by all we are already planning on doing it again next year! Local girl on American Idol

A local girl from Jamestown made an appearance on the hit show American Idol on Wednesday. Making her 7th attempt to become the next American Idol, she was unsuccessful, but had the opportunity to make a national television appearance and meet her fashion icon Victoria Beckham. Although she didn’t get Simon’s vote she certainly drew a very “Simon-esque” comment out of him causing him to say it would take until American Idol 27 for Stephanie to get “un-nervous” enough to sing well enough to advance in the competition.

We are all very proud of Stephanie for making it on to the show, and wish her luck in the future. Keep following your dreams Ms. Fisher and just know we are all behind you.

Hey everybody,

Just to give you an update on what’s going on at the arena we’ve got some events scheduled that you may be interested in. Saturday February 13 we have a Mardi Gras party going on in the Arena Club upstairs at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena. Tickets are $10 and we have two bands performing throughout the night. Event starts at 7:30pm with Hypnotic Clambake performing for the first time in the Arena Club. The Pennsyltucky Peach Pickers will go on after to close out the event. There will be food, drinks, and dancing throughout the night to celebrate the holiday that New Orleans made famous.

On February 27th the Demarco Sisters School of Dance will be holding a cheer leading competition at the arena and will host teams all throughout the county and other visiting teams in the surrounding area. It’s a one day competition and will surely be fun for the family or any cheer enthusiast!

We’re also currently in the process of finishing up booking for 2010 and once our schedule is completed we will release it on our website. That’s all for now but check back often for up to date information on what’s happening at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena.
